The Breaking Point

THUNK! A HUGE STACK OF FILES LANDED ON MY DESK

It was 5:50 on a Friday, and I was just about to finish up for the day and take my 3 YO nephew to the park when my boss dumped an (at least) 6 hour pile of discovery on me. He sipped his stale coffee and leaned a Wrangler jean-clad butt cheek on my desk declaring it would be a “long night.”⠀

This was my breaking point.

New attorneys put up with a LOT, y’all—difficult clients, mountains of discovery responses, late nights and absurd demands from senior partners. All I could think about was my sweet-faced little blonde nephew waiting for me at the front window… anxious for me to pull up and take him on our date. I hadn’t seen him all week, (70 hour work weeks tend to cut into playground time) and I had promised him a trip to the park.

I quit my job that day.

I was indignant and relieved all weekend. But, when Monday morning came—I stared at my ceiling fan in a panic. WTF am I going to do now?  I’d quit in a way that…um.. lets just say there was no coming back from, (I am queen of glorious, dramatic exits) pissing off one of the most prominent attorneys in town..

So, I opened my own firm.

Wow, did I learn a LOT about business and how to bring in clients. There’s nothing quite like an empty law firm with your name on the sign and no phone ringing to wake up the hustle in you.

I’ve learned some stuff about building businesses over the last 15 years. Here’s what I know:⠀

Have you wanted to start your own business for a while, but aren’t quite sure how to put it all together? Where will clients come from? Who will help me with the tech? What exactly is my “brand”?

How can I stand out online? I had lots of the same questions.⠀
