In a perfect world, everyone on Instagram would love every piece of content you share. You spend a lot of time curating the perfect feed and writing scroll-stopping captions, but at the end of the day, not everyone is going to care. And that’s okay! What matters is that you learn the Instagram tips you need to know to engage and connect with the right people, or, your niche. They’re the ones to whom you can truly provide value and who ultimately will invest in you and your business.
You might be wondering how the heck you’re supposed to do that. Well, I’m here to tell you! Here are my five Instagram tips to help you find your niche.
#1. Figure Out Your Sweet Spot
Before you can start whipping up the perfect posts in Canva and typing up those captivating captions, you need to be ultra clear on your sweet spot! When it comes to identifying your niche, your sweet spot is the point where what you’re good at, what you enjoy, and a market of eager and interested people meet.
To figure out the sweet spot for your niche, consider if there is a skill you’ve honed and practiced that you’re ready to share. Are you an info junkie about a specific topic? Think about what you’re good at. It’s okay to dust your shoulders off a bit here!
Next, focus on what you enjoy doing. Is there a hobby you’ve gotten absolutely addicted to or a passion you pour all your free time into? I’m not talking about which Netflix series you’re binging. I mean the things you do where your creative energy bolts through you or that fill your heart with fire. What lights you up inside?
Last, consider what market there is for your niche. Is that thing you enjoy, and you’re good at something people need and want help with? You might think your sweet spot is really relevant and essential. Still, if there aren’t folks out there searching for what you’re offering, you might hit a wall growing a following and building your customer base. *Sigh.* If only I could build a business teaching people upside-down yoga while howling at the moon.

#2. Research Your Niche
The accounts you follow, admire, and like to browse most as you scroll through Instagram might tell you a lot about your niche: You just have to do a little analysis. Don’t worry. It’s not as scary as that might sound!
- What topics do they focus on and talk about a lot?
- Have you saved their posts, and if so, which ones?
- Which of their Reels have caught your attention, maybe made you laugh but also had you nodding your head with appreciation?
- What hashtags do they use frequently? These give you the inside scoop on who they’re trying to reach and the topics they want to get attention for.
Next, look at your favorite accounts and explore who they follow and who else follows them. It’s okay to creep a little! Find the commonalities in their age, genders, locations, and hobbies, but more importantly, try to zone in on their pain points. What are they struggling to accomplish in their lives, or, what are they aspiring to achieve?
#3. Engage with Your Ideal Audience
Let’s take this a step further and go straight to the source! Ask your ideal client for their input to hear exactly how you can help them. Get their feedback on the issues and topics they’re dying to hear about.
If you really want to get to the bottom of who your niche is, you have to engage with your ideal audience and ask questions about their priorities, values, and what’s on their plate. What keeps them up at night? What are they moaning and groaning about in their life or business? Pay attention to the content they share and what it tells you about where they’re focusing their energy.
Once you know your ideal clients’ needs and how you can meet them, you can start customizing your content to address those points and watch the likes, comments, and DMs come rolling on in.

#4. Get Specific About Your Niche
One of the best Instagram tips I can give you for finding your niche is to get hyper-specific. Recognizing that your niche is yoga teachers, for example, is a great first step, but I want you to really dig in here. There are a gazillion different people who are interested in yoga. Narrow it down: Are you a yoga teacher for moms recovering from postpartum disorders? Do you teach yoga to burned-out medical professionals?
The more narrowly you can pinpoint who the people are you want to serve, the more strategically you can target them and create content that will speak to them. This way you can give your audience exactly what they want. And as you really hone in on your specific zone of genius, the more people will see you as an expert in that area and seek you out as the “go-to” professional.
You know that feeling when you find an Instagram account that shares posts you like every single time, because they always resonate with you? With a specific niche, you can cut through the noise your ideal client might otherwise scroll past and grab their attention with captions, images, and other content that will make them feel seen and that will help you build your credibility with them!
#5. Make Sure Your Profile’s On Point
Now that you know your niche and you’re speaking the language of your ideal client, you should be catching their eye and getting them curious about who you are. This is where your profile comes into play. The last thing you want is for someone in your niche to visit your profile and not be clear about what you do or how you can help them. It could be a big missed opportunity for you both!
When an ideal client clicks your username, and your profile pops up, they should be able to figure out what you do and what problem you can solve for them in a matter of seconds. Think of your Instagram profile as your digital business card.
The last of my Instagram tips for you today is to make sure your profile demonstrates your expertise and establishes your authority. Don’t be afraid to tell people what makes you unique and why they should take notice!
Then, consider your content. OK, yes, pictures of you and your kids and pets are cute and relatable. But make sure that a quick scan of your feed grid will paint a pretty good picture of what you focus on and the value you bring to the table. As you prep content for the future, always keep your niche in mind and how your posts, Stories, and Reels will make their lives better. .
